Mama goose makes her rent-free home at town hall

The Town of Whitby yesterday announced it has two new residents, with more to come!

Two local Canadian geese have decided that the town hall is where they want to nest.

Town staff have affectionately named the mama, Whitley, and the town is inviting all residents to follow her maternity journey live on the town’s new Goose cam.

The town is also asking residents to  guess the hatch date. If you do, you will be automatically entered to win a Whitby prize pack, and bragging rights, of course, said the announcement.

It said the town wants to ensure the mama and her babies stay safe, so is asking residents to watch her from the live feed and give her space if you need to come to town hall. If residents need to drop off taxes after-hours, they are asked to take extra care when using the drop box.

  • Baby geese are called goslings.
  • The goslings will stay with their parents for the first year of their life.
  • The birds mate for life, which can be anywhere from 10 to 25 years.
  • Migrating geese can reach speeds of more than 100 kilometres per hour when the wind is right. In those conditions they can travel 1,000 kilometres in a day
