Metrolinx has new (e)bike policy, expands storage on GO

Metrolinx has announced it is increasing bike capacity across the GO network due to increased demand, and as part of a revised bike policy.

New measures outlined in the policy include requiring that all e-bike batteries meet standard UL or CE requirements with no physical damage to the battery case or warranty seal. E-bike batteries cannot be charged on GO Transit property and e-bikes can be a maximum of 55kg on GO Trains or 25kg on GO Buses. Full details on the new policy are available here.

Additionally, Metrolinx is reminding customers not to ride bikes or e-bikes within stations or on platforms, and to remove e-bike batteries before storing bikes on GO bus racks.

The new policy, which came into effect on April 9, reflects Metrolinx’s ongoing commitment to improve services and passenger safety, said a notice.

It said to support customers during this transition, GO Transit staff will be on hand to educate passengers, direct customers to dedicated bike coaches, help disperse bikes more evenly across all train coaches and ensure bikes do not exceed capacity limits.

Earlier this month, Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria announced that Metrolinx will be adding eight new refurbished bike coaches to the GO network. Once in service, the new bike coaches will provide additional capacity on the Kitchener Line, as well as seasonal service on weekend Lakeshore West trips to Niagara Falls. Each bike coach can hold up to 22 bikes, as well as additional seating for customers.
