Metrolinx, the operator of GO Transit, is preparing for the Bowmanville Extension project by clearing and pruning designated trees and vegetation near the CPKC rail line in Oshawa.
The City of Oshawa, quoting a Metrolinx notice, said work will be conducted on both CPKC and municipal land adjacent to Fisher Street and Albert Street.
The project is scheduled from March 26 to April 2, with work taking place daily between 9 am and 7 pm. Officials noted that working hours may be extended or rescheduled due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.
The notice explained that all trees marked with dots along the trail corridor (see map below) will be removed and replaced at a minimum ratio of 1:1. In addition, any bird nests encountered during the tree removal process will be surveyed by an avian biologist to ensure that protected species are not impacted.
Residents and businesses near the rail corridor should expect construction noise from trucks, chainsaws, wood chippers, and other equipment as the project progresses.

Bowmanville Train Extension Timeline
On December 11, 2023, Notice to Proceed was issued by the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.
On October 5, 2023, Metrolinx published Notice of Environmental Project Report Addendum for the GO Lakeshore East Extension Project, with a 30 day public review period ending November 6, 2023.
In June 2023, Metrolinx announced Bowmanville Construction Partners (BCP) as the construction manager for the project. BCP is a general partnership between Ledcor CMI Ltd. and Dragados Canada Inc.
On April 20, 2022, Metrolinx released the Preliminary Design Business Case for the GO Lakeshore East Extension. On May 6, 2022, Premier Doug Ford announced the Progressive Conservatives intend to invest $730 million to bring two-way, all-day GO Train service to Bowmanville.
In June 2016, the Provincial government of the day announced the extension of the GO Rail Service along the Lakeshore East corridor. The GO Lakeshore East Extension would use the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) rail line running north of Highway 401. It would run through Central Oshawa to Courtice and Bowmanville, as per Metrolinx’s 2011 Environmental Assessment.
