New water reservoir planned for Newcastle

The Regional Municipality of Durham said it has completed a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) to determine solutions to ensure the municipal water supply meets the service needs for the existing population and for the forecasted growth in the Newcastle Urban Area.

Based on the findings of this Municipal Class EA study, the preferred solution includes establishing a new pumping station and water reservoir on a new site, located on the west side of Arthur Street, north of the existing reservoir site, said a municipal statement.

A summary of the study process and the recommendations are included in the Project File Report, which can be accessed by visiting durham.ca/NewcastleWaterZone1 until March 29, 2021.

Requests from the public may be made to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks for an order requiring a higher level of study (e.g., individual/comprehensive EA approval before proceeding), or that conditions be imposed (e.g., requires further studies), only on the grounds that the requested order may prevent, mitigate or remedy adverse impacts on constitutionally protected inherent and treaty rights of a First Nation or Indigenous Community. Requests should include the requester’s contact information, including their full name, the statement said.
