Nighttime ‘rolling block’ deployed to stop impaired teen

A fleeing impaired teen has been charged with dangerous driving after he was stopped in a ‘rolling block’ deployment by Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS).

A rolling road block or slow roll is used by police to slow and control traffic.

On Wednesday July 5 at 12:35 am, officers on a proactive patrol in Ajax saw a vehicle driving southbound on Harwood Avenue. They had concerns the driver was impaired.

When they attempted to stop the vehicle, it fled southbound resulting in a short pursuit. It was quickly terminated due to the fleeing driver’s speed, said a police statement.

It said a short time later, another officer saw the suspect vehicle moving at a high rate of speed at Brock Road and Highway 401.

Multiple units were in the area and were able to coordinate a rolling block, stopping the vehicle.

A 17-year old from Scarborough was charged, police said.
