Durham police yesterday unveiled its latest tech weapon to fight crime in Downtown Oshawa – a new utility terrain vehicle (UTV).
Officers are committed to chase down those on the wrong side of the law through any terrain where going on foot or bicycles is slow and where it is difficult for vehicles built for road travel.
However, that does not mean, that the stalwarts of the Durham police will not be chasing down criminals on foot, in their cruisers, motorcycles and bicycles.
In addition, two officers on bicycles have been deployed.
The above efforts are part of part of Project Atlantis II, a coordinated and proactive community safety initiative focused on Downtown Oshawa.
Building On Lessons Learned
“The UTV will enhance officer visibility and allow police to more quickly access multi‑use paths, green spaces, and parks, improving mobility and response in areas not easily reached by traditional patrol vehicles,” said a police statement.
While this initiative represents the fifth consecutive year of focused downtown safety efforts in Oshawa, 2026 marks the second year operating under the Project Atlantis framework, building on lessons learned and established partnerships from previous years, the police said.
Project Atlantis II will continue through the summer months, with DRPS and its partners working closely with businesses, residents, and community organizations to address safety concerns while promoting a welcoming and inclusive downtown Oshawa.
