One in four Durham households experiencing food insecurity

In Durham, one in four households is experiencing food insecurity, according to the Region of Durham.

To help address this ongoing challenge, the region is accepting applications to the Sustainable Food Security Fund.

The fund supports local non-profit organizations with initiatives that promote long-term, sustainable solutions to improve food security for residents. The 2026 funding limit is up to a maximum of $50,000 per approved application, said a region statement.

The call for applications opened on May 4 and the deadline to apply is May 27 at noon.

The Sustainable Food Security Fund aims to contribute to sustainable food security solutions; promote dignity for users of food programs; increase efficiency within the food distribution system; build capacity of existing food programs; and increase access to fresh, nutritious food, the region said.

It said Durham region’s non-profit sector provides important programs and services to support residents of all ages and stages, helping to address key issues that impact our community. Through supporting community non-profits, we will help to build a stronger Durham.
