One-in-four Durham households have food insecurity: region

The Region of Durham said one in four households is experiencing food insecurity in Durham.

To combat this problem, the region has a fund supports non-profit organizations with up to $50,000 each, which have initiatives that promote solutions to improve food security.

These include food banks, community gardens, nutrition education programs, innovative ideas to recover surplus food from grocery stores, and other initiatives. The fund aims to increase access to food, promote dignity for residents accessing food programs, contribute to food security solutions, increase efficiency within the food distribution system, and build capacity for existing food programs, said a region statement.

It announced it is accepting applications to the Sustainable Food Security Fund. Applications opened March 24 and will remain open until all funding is allocated, with a funding limit of up to $50,000 per project.
