Police caution after odometer-altered truck goes on sale

A 23-year-old male has been charged with fraud after attempting to sell a vehicle with the odometer reading altered.

On February 9, investigators with the Financial Crimes Unit were contacted by a male who advised that he had sold his black 2012 Dodge Ram with an odometer reading of 376,000 kilometres to the suspect in January 2.

Shortly afterwards, the exact same vehicle was being sold with the odometer reading showing 180,000 kilometres, said a police statement.

Officers commenced an investigation and the suspect was arrested at an address in Toronto. The vehicle was seized.

The suspect was  charged with: Fraud Over $5,000; Possession of Property Obtained by Crime and Alter the Odometer under the Weight and Measures Act. More details at www.drps.ca.

He was released on an Undertaking.

Investigators urge that buyers protect themselves when purchasing used vehicles and recommend that they ask for a Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP) or obtain a full vehicle history report from CARFAX.
