Population growth forces review of Pickering ward boundaries

The City of Pickering has launched a ward boundary review to assess whether the ward boundaries adopted in 2021 — and scheduled to take effect for the 2026 municipal election — are still appropriate in light of ongoing population growth and shifting demographics.

The city did not release current population statistics or past or future growth trends.

According to the city, ward boundary reviews are a key part of ensuring fair and effective representation. By helping to balance the population across wards, the reviews aim to ensure that all residents have equitable access to local government and are fairly represented by their elected officials.

On January 27, Pickering city council directed staff to revisit the findings of the 2021 ward boundary review, this time using the most recent population data and updated growth projections. Based on these findings, staff will determine whether changes to the existing ward boundaries, as set out in By-law 7875/21, are needed.

“As our city continues to grow and change, it’s important that our systems of representation evolve along with it,” said Mayor Kevin Ashe. “This review ensures that we’re listening to our community and delivering a democratic process that reflects the needs of our residents, today and into the future.”
