Durham police have arrested more than 200 individuals and laid over 400 charges as part of Project Gian, an eight-week region-wide initiative targeting outstanding arrest warrants.
According to the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS), “Investigators from the DRPS Offender Management Unit have arrested 202 individuals, executed 267 arrest warrants and laid 406 charges during an eight-week project throughout Durham Region.”
The operation took place between March and May and was led by the Offender Management Unit with support from divisional units. The goal of Project Giant was to locate and arrest individuals with outstanding DRPS warrants, focusing on those wanted for Fail to Comply and Fail to Appear offences.
“Project Giant resulted in 327 Fail to Comply/Fail to Appear Charges and 79 charges for other offences, including theft, assault peace officer and obstruct justice,” police said.
Of the 202 individuals arrested, 65 were held for bail hearings. “Of those, 55 were released, and 15 have since re-offended or been re-arrested—underscoring a concerning trend of recidivism,” DRPS noted.
A complete list of names and charges is available on the police website at drps.ca.
The DRPS thanked members of the investigative team and partner law enforcement agencies for their work on the project. Anyone with information about wanted individuals is asked to contact the Offender Management Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5357.
