Town’s fun police not banning backyard BBQs: Whitby

As BBQ season is here, the Town of Whitby has decided to clarify claims seen circulating around that “the town’s fun police are banning backyard BBQs”.

It explained what is actually allowed under the Town of Whitby’s Fires By-law:

  • Residents can use a grill, barbecue, cooking appliance, or gas fireplace outdoors.
  • Propane and natural gas fire pits are also permitted – and are a great alternative.

What isn’t allowed?

  • Wood‑burning fire bowls, chimeneas’, and campfires are not permitted.
  • All outdoor fires in Whitby are regulated under the Town’s Fires By-law.
  • Open air burning means the burning of any material outside of a building – and restrictions are in place to help keep everyone safe.

This by-law does not apply to an outdoor fire place constructed with a building permit or to a factory built outdoor cooking appliance that is being used in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications, the town said.

Open-air fires are only permitted for the purposes of cooking food, burning rural yard waste, or burning agricultural waste; with a permit and only if it’s in accordance with the provisions of the Ontario Fire Code.
