The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (Cloca) yesterday said rainfall is expected to be in the 15- 20mm range.
According to the current forecast, further precipitation in the range of 15-25mm is expected on Saturday March 25, which would prolong the period of snowmelt and increased runoff into the weekend, said a statement.
It said the Surface Water Monitoring Centre (SWMC) of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF), was tracking a strong low-pressure system that was set to move into Ontario yesterday bringing showers and periods of rain as well as above freezing temperatures.
A moderate snowpack still exists in the Cloca watershed, especially in the north. This snowpack combined with milder temperatures, frozen ground conditions and the incoming precipitation will result in substantial runoff causing higher than normal water levels and flows in our streams. Widespread flooding is not anticipated, however fast flowing water and flooding of low-lying areas and roadways may be expected in flood prone areas.
The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority is asking all residents to stay away from all watercourses, shorelines, and structures such as bridges, culverts, and dams. Increased wave activity, elevated water levels, fast flowing water, and slippery conditions along stream banks and Lake Ontario shorelines continue to make these locations extremely dangerous.
This Water Safety Statement will be in effect through Monday March 27, 2023, or until further notice. Stay up to date at Cloca’s website.
