Uxbridge community gets connected to natural gas grid

The Sandford Natural Gas Expansion Project, which allows homes, businesses, and farms to connect to the natural gas grid for the first time, has been completed, according to Pickering-Uxbridge MPP Peter Bethlenfalvy and Ontario Minister of Energy and Electrification Stephen Lecce.

The Sandford Project, part of Phase 2 of Ontario’s Natural Gas Expansion Program, received up to $4.4 million in funding from the province. The project, delivered by Enbridge Gas, connects more than 180 homes and businesses, as well as the local community centre.

Households in Sandford, a community in the Township of Uxbridge, could save up to 50 per cent in annual energy costs by switching from more expensive fuel sources, while businesses could save up to 30 per cent, said a statement issued on the occasion.

“The completion of the Enbridge Natural Gas expansion project to Sandford is an important milestone for our community and rural Ontario. This project ensures reliable and affordable energy for homes, farms, and businesses, supporting growth and sustainability,” said Dave Barton, Mayor of Uxbridge. “Access to multiple energy sources is essential for building resilience, particularly in emergency management scenarios. Rural Ontario plays a key role in the province’s success, and projects like this demonstrate how collaboration can strengthen our communities.”

“Expanding natural gas infrastructure supports the growth of modern and affordable homes. By improving access to this energy source, home builders can meet rising demand while ensuring cost-effective and sustainable energy solutions for homeowners,” added Stacey Hawkins, Executive Officer, Durham Region Home Builders Association.

The completion of the Sandford project is part of the government’s broader strategy to meet growing energy demands. Ontario’s Affordable Energy Future: The Pressing Case for More Power outlines the province’s plan to ensure affordable and sustainable energy, including:

  • Energy Planning – Developing an integrated energy plan that includes electricity, natural gas, and other fuels.
  • Nuclear Energy – Expanding nuclear power with new projects at Bruce Power and Darlington and supporting Ontario Power Generation’s plan to refurbish the Pickering Nuclear Generation Station.
  • New Transmission Infrastructure – Prioritizing transmission lines in Southwestern, Northeastern, and Eastern Ontario to support job creation and industry growth.
  • Keeping Costs Down – Investing $10.9 billion in energy efficiency programs to help families and businesses reduce electricity usage and lower energy bills.
  • Competitive Procurements – Launching Ontario’s largest procurement of clean energy resources while re-contracting existing capacity at a 30 per cent discount.
