Two policemen face court for wrong-way 401 crash: SIU

The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, yesterday said he has reasonable grounds to believe two Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) officers committed criminal offences in relation to a fatal multi-vehicle collision that occurred on April 29, 2024.

Both officers are required to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at 150 Bond Street in Oshawa on February 13.

The wrong-way police chase of a Clarington robbery suspect cargo van cost the lives of four people, including an infant, and serious injuries to two other people.

The SIU said an Indian couple from Ajax lost their baby son and its grandparents who were visiting from India, in the crash. The wife suffered serious injuries.

The driver of the van that was being pursued by police, also died.

As a result of the SIU investigation, a DRPS sergeant and a constable are each facing charges. Name and further details available at www.siu.on.ca.

Editor’s Note: Durham Post does not name or identify the accused as:
1. Of this time, they are suspect[s] and not convicted by a court, and
2. Sometimes charges are amended or dropped.
