Environment Canada issued a weather alert for Durham yesterday, warning of strong winds that developed last night and were projeced to continue into today.
These high winds could add to the challenges faced by norther Durham communities still recovering from earlier weather events, where ice storm damage has affected infrastructure and safety. The Township of Brock has declared an emergency. It yesterday said there are still pockets in the township without power. Some areas will be restored today (Monday).
Recovery efforts were still underway before the strong winds advisory. Residents have been advised to secure outdoor items and remain vigilant for any hazards that may arise.
Environment Canada said wind gusts of Monday night could reach up to 80 kmh as a cold front moves through the region. Such winds may toss loose objects, break tree branches, and potentially prolong utility outages in areas already impacted by recent storms.
Local emergency services and utility companies are monitoring the situation closely and are preparing for potential service disruptions. Residents are encouraged to follow official updates from Environmental Canada and local authorities to stay informed about conditions in their area.
Township of Scugog was placed under a Special Weather Statement last evening until today morning.
“With strong wind gusts up to 80kmh expected, we encourage residents to secure loose objects and be prepared with a survival kit in the case of power outages,” the township advised.
