Will passing of Carter baton to Tito-Dante be challenged?

All eyes are set on the City of Oshawa – the largest municipality in Durham – as the race to select its new mayor kicked off on May 1.

It is understood that incumbent, Mayor Dan Carter will not be running for a repeat, and as of May 1, only one nomination for the post has been filed – by current Ward 2 Regional and City Councillor Tito-Dante Marimpietri, seen as Carter’s chosen successor.

Last elections, media personality Joe Ingino, had challenged Carter. Durham Post asked if Ingino planned to run again for mayor, but has not yet received a response.

Prospective candidates have until August 21 to file nominations, so it is early days as yet.

Elections are to be held on October 26.

Meanwhile, southern Oshawa Ward 5 and Regional Councillor Brian Nicholson, faces a  challenge from Kristen McKinnon in the upcoming elections. “Today is the first day of nominations for the Oshawa Municipal election and I already have a registered opponent for the position of Regional and City Councillor in Ward 5,” said Nicholson on May 1.

Nominations as of May 1

Ward 2 Regional and City Councillor Tito-Dante Marimpietri has filed his nomination for mayor.

No one had filed a nomination of Ward 1 Regional and City Councillor (incumbent John Neal) and City Councillor (incumbent Rosemary McConkey).

Cameron Anderson has filed nomination for Ward 2 Regional and City Councillor (being vacated by incumbent Marimpietri). No nomination had been filed for City Councillor. Incumbent is Jim Lee.

Incumbent Bob Chapman has filed his nomination for Ward 3 Regional and City Councillor, while no nomination  has been filed City Councillor. Incumbent is Bradley Marks.

Incumbent Ward 4 Regional and City Councillor Rick Kerr has filed nomination. Derek Giberson, incumbent City Councillor is yet to file.

Incumbent Ward 5 City and Regional Councillor Brian Nicholson faces a  challenge from Kristen McKinnon. No nomination has been filed for Ward 5 City Councillor. Incumbent is John Gray.

Marimpeitri Announces Nomination

On May 1, Marimpietri announced: “Today, with the support of my loving family and so many others, I am proud to officially announce that I have filed my nomination and am now registered to campaign to serve as the next mayor of the great and historic City of Oshawa.

“We stand on the precipice of big change and unprecedented opportunity. Major investment is on the horizon, and the decisions we make today will define the future of our city for generations to come. At this pivotal moment, I am stepping forward, fully committed, fully energized, and fully dedicated to the people of Oshawa,” he said.

  1. I’m a long time down-town Oshawa resident I believe Tito will do a great job for sure, he has been involved in Oshawa’s well-being for many years………..now we need to get rid of that waste of space Derek Giberson and our municipal staff will be complete.
