Winter blows hot and cold for Durham outdoor rinks

Fluctuating temperatures – and covid – this winter have been toying with outdoor ice rinks that were set up with much enthusiasm by municipalities across Durham.

They’re on now, they’re off now, has been a common theme in the past few weeks.

Despite the current extreme cold warning in effect for Durham, some rinks are still not in operation, while, ironically others are.

City of Pickering yesterday announced that three of its outdoor ice rinks – Claremont Memorial Park, Forestbrook Park and Greenwood Park – have reopened.

However, the rink at Rick Hull Memorial Park remains closed due to poor ice conditions.

Last Wednesday, Whitby announced that unfortunately, the outdoor ice rinks have been closed as of February 9 due to the warmer weather.

The natural outdoor ice rinks will remain closed today, February 11, 2022, due to the weather conditions, read a recent notice from Oshawa.

Earlier on February 9, the natural outdoor ice rinks at the Delpark Homes Centre were  closed due to the ice conditions.
