Ajax Gas Leak Safe: Punctured main line under repair

The area of Church Street North and Delaney Drive in Ajax, where a natural gas leak occurred on Tuesday, January 10 afternoon, is secure, according to a town statement.

“A main distribution line was punctured. To ensure gas supply to the area, a temporary bypass line was installed last night,” said an update from Ajax Fire, quoted by the statement.

“Enbridge Gas is commencing repairs on the main line this morning (January 11, 2023).

“There is no risk to residents and Ajax Fire remain on scene for safety purposes. The town will provide a final update once the area has reopened.”

Enbridge Gas said: “Gas leak related to a damaged pipeline has been stopped. Repairs are underway and area is secure.

“Thank you to Emergency Responders.” It also thanked the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) for helping contain the area and ensure public safety.

Shelter-in-Place

Durham District School Board (DDSB), said eight of its schools in the area were put under shelter-in-place.

“We’ve been made aware of a gas leak impacting the following schools:

  1. Eagle Ridge PS,
  2. AG Bell PS,
  3. Pickering HS,
  4. PineRidge SS,
  5. Lincoln Alex PS.
  6. Maple Ridge PS,
  7. Pearson Ajax, and
  8. Westney Heights.

“All schools are in ‘Shelter in Place’ which means classes continue as scheduled. More info to come.”

Later, DDSB lifted the shelter in place at all schools.

“We continue to asses the situation as schools have reported a decrease in odour. All schools are planning for a regular dismissal.
