Town of Ajax Mayor Shaun Collier and Library Board Chair Piyali Correya said they were ‘horrified’ regarding an act of violence at the Ajax Library.
“On behalf of Ajax Council and the Ajax Library Board, we are horrified by the act of violence that occurred at the Ajax Library Main Branch on Saturday, which appears to have been motivated by Islamophobia,” said a joint statement.
A woman reportedly tried to forcibly remove a traditional head scarf (hijab) off another and set it on fire. The suspect has been detained and charged (see below).
The statement pointed out that the library strives to be a safe and welcoming space for everyone, and acts of hate and violence will not be tolerated in any town facility or public space.
“To the victim of this terrible act and anyone triggered, hurt, or disheartened by this attack – especially as it occurred during Ramadan, a month of peace and spiritual connection – we are here to support you and to stand up against all forms of hate and intolerance,” it said.
It urged residents needing help to reach out to the town’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion team at diversity@ajax.ca.
Several hate crimes have been reported across several Durham municipalities since the outbreak of the war in the Middle East (see below).
