Imagine 12,953 cereal boxes, all toppling like dominoes. That’s what the organizers of an event called knock down hunger are planning to do at the Rickard Complex in Bowmanville on Canada Day, as they try to set a world record – and they need your help to do it.
“Sadly, there are families that can’t afford to pay the rent and buy groceries too,” says Nancy Leblanc of the Seeds of Hope Project, the lead organizer of the Knockdown. “During the school year, there are programs to provide food for children who need it. We’ve planned our challenge at the beginning of July to make sure there will be lots of cereal available during the summer too. No child should ever have to go hungry!”
After the event, the cereal boxes will be distributed by Feed the Need in Durham to its member agencies across the region – food banks, shelters, and more.
Chris Ostrander of Feed the Need says the event will boost awareness of food insecurity in the region and help the agency fill a critical need. “Breakfast staples like cereal are often in short supply — this event will help bridge the gap.”
How you can help:
- Donate as many boxes of cereal as you can to help build the largest ever domino chain!
- Drop off donations in advance at Loblaws Bowmanville, Boston Pizza Bowmanville and Cowan Buick GMC
- Volunteer to help set up and take down during the event.
