The Regional Municipality of Durham is reminding all landowners within the region about their responsibilities under the Weed Control Act.
According to it, landowners must ensure that noxious weeds on their property are destroyed throughout the season. If landowners fail to do so, the municipality may enter the land to remove the weeds, with the cost of removal charged to the landowner.
The Weed Control Act aims to reduce the impact of noxious weeds on agriculture and horticulture, particularly on lands that are used for these purposes and that generate income or other benefits for the industry. The act does not apply to private properties such as lawns and gardens, which are intended for personal use and leisure.
It is important to note that sections 3, 13, 16, and 18 of the act do not apply to noxious weeds or weed seeds located far away from lands used for agricultural or horticultural purposes, particularly in urban areas.
For more information or to learn more about the Weed Control Act, landowners are encouraged to visit the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs’ website at ontario.ca/omafa and search for Weed Control Act FAQs.
