DRPS launches hiring push ahead of 40% population growth

The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has launched a new recruitment campaign, aiming to attract individuals who are ready to “Embrace the Challenge. Make an Impact.”

According to police, the campaign comes in response to one of the most competitive recruitment landscapes in decades. With Durham Region’s population expected to increase by 40 per cent by 2046—and reaching an estimated 1.3 million residents by 2051—the need for proactive, community-focused officers is growing rapidly.

“There’s no question that policing is a challenging profession—it demands integrity, resilience, and a genuine commitment to service,” said DRPS Chief Peter Moreira. “This campaign is about reaching people who want more than a job. It’s about finding those who are called to serve and giving them a meaningful career built on purpose and impact.”

Running from July through September, the campaign includes display ads, digital content, and targeted messaging across social media platforms. DRPS says the campaign uses a digital-first approach to meet potential recruits where they are—on their phones and in their social feeds—with all messaging leading to the recruitment website joindrps.ca. There, applicants can learn more about the organization’s focus on community, inclusion, wellness, and career development.

DRPS notes that while its existing recruitment methods have seen success, this expanded approach is needed to meet growing demands and future hiring requirements.

“We are seeing rapid growth in our region, which brings both opportunities and challenges,” said Shaun Collier, Chair of the Durham Regional Police Services Board. “We need to ensure we have the strength and diversity in our service to meet those evolving needs. We’re not just offering a uniform—we’re offering the chance to help shape and safeguard the region’s future.”

Police say a career with DRPS offers a path to purpose, balance, and a lasting impact in one of Ontario’s most vibrant and welcoming regions.
