Durham resident impersonated in Mississuaga bank fraud

In May 2024, police issued a ‘Help Solve a Crime’ appeal seeking public assistance in identifying a female suspect involved in a fraud case, according to law enforcement officials.

Police reported that on March 1, 2024, the suspect visited three TD Bank branches in Mississauga, Ontario, impersonating a Durham Region resident. Investigators stated that the suspect took control of the victim’s cell phone number through a SIM swap and used it to receive passcodes through the bank’s two-factor authentication system. The suspect then transferred money from the victim’s bank account into another account.

Officials stated that shortly after, an unidentified male suspect visited another TD Bank and withdrew the fraudulently obtained funds.

According to police, on February 24, members of the Durham Regional Police Service Financial Crimes Unit located and arrested the female suspect without incident.

A 57-year-old female of Windsor and a 20-year-old male of Toronto were both charged. Police did not say whether the suspects was held for bail or released for an undertaking. Names and further details available at www.drps.ca.

Anyone with information about this or similar incidents is asked to contact D/Cst. Kane of the Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5371.
