Fundraiser to help Durham students start new school year

The Ignite Durham Learning Foundation (IDLF) is calling on the community to help ensure every student across the Durham District School Board (DDSB) can start the school year prepared and confident.

The organization is currently raising funds through its ‘Operation Backpack’ campaign, aimed at helping thousands of children across Durham Region.

According to a 2019 regional study, some neighbourhoods experience poverty rates as high as 23 per cent, meaning nearly one in four children may attend school without basic necessities. With inflation and rising living costs, IDLF says even more families are feeling the strain.

“With over 80,000 students in the DDSB, we believe more than 20,000 could be in need of support,” IDLF stated. “Every child deserves to begin the school year with a backpack full of supplies and the confidence that comes with being prepared.”

The charity emphasizes that donations have an impact far beyond the classroom. “Your donation not only provides school supplies, it creates a foundation for academic success, confidence, and inclusion,” the organization added.

As of this morning $220 had been raised on the GoFundMe campaign. The target is $6,000.

As a registered charity, IDLF works to remove barriers to education by providing essential supports—such as school supplies, nutrition, and technology—to DDSB students facing financial hardship.
