Grandparent scam suspects acted as police officers

Two male suspects have been charged after defrauding victims in a grandparent scam.

On December 28, the victim was contacted by a person claiming to be a police officer, stating that the victim’s grandson had been arrested. For the grandson to avoid charges the victim was told to pay $9,000. The suspects attended the victim’s residence under the guise of being court officers and collected the money. The victim was again contacted on December 29, requesting more money. The victim contacted police with suspect descriptors, explained a police statement.

On Thursday, January 5, a second victim was contacted by a person claiming to be a court officer, stating they would attend the residence to pick up cash as the victim’s grandson had been in an accident. The victim contacted police and the suspects were taken into custody.

Both suspects of Toronto were charged and released on an undertaking. Names and further details available at www.drps.ca.
