Green light for Oshawa school to issue tender for expansion

The Ontario government has approved the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) to move forward with a tender for a new addition at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic School in Oshawa, aimed at creating more classroom space for local students.

The $3.8 million investment will fund the construction of six new classrooms and provide space for 138 additional elementary students. The project also includes nearly $450,000 in additional funding to support its completion.

“The funding for a new addition at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic School in Oshawa is great news for our community,” said Todd McCarthy, MPP for Durham. “Through this investment, we’re creating opportunities for students to thrive today and well into the future.”

The announcement is part of Ontario’s broader infrastructure and education strategy. The provincial government is committing about $23 billion over 10 years to school construction, renewal, and improvements.

“Our government is focused on supporting students, teachers, and parents while ensuring school boards are equipping our students with the tools they need to succeed,” said Paul Calandra, Minister of Education. “Once completed, this project will offer an inspiring learning environment that helps students prepare for the jobs of tomorrow.”

Minister of Infrastructure Kinga Surma added that the province’s nearly $200 billion infrastructure plan is focused on delivering better schools, transit, and communities across Ontario.

Monique Forster, DCDSB Chair, thanked the provincial government for its continued support of Catholic education in the region. “This additional investment in the St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic School six-classroom expansion will help us to meet the needs of our growing community as we continue to provide excellent Catholic education to students and families in Oshawa,” she said.

St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic School is located at 1425 Coldstream Drive in Oshawa.
