Open-air burn ban issued across Durham post Ajax fire

Following a fire in Ajax on Tuesday (all images), there have been a raft of open-air burn bans issued across Durham.

Durham Region Responses said there was a fire in a storage lot facility in Ajax’s south end. Heavy smoke and flames were visible pre-arrival. Firefighters adopted a defensive strategy with numerous lines in operation, including a deck gun and aerial device.

Ajax Fire and Emergency Services yesterday said effective immediately, Ajax will be implementing a ban of all open air burning for the present time. “No open air burn permits will be issued.”

City of Pickering: PickeringFire said open air burning ban is ow in effect, and advised residents to be extra cautious as fire can quickly spread out of control in dry conditions. It asked residents to make sure all matches or cigarettes are out before disposing them, and to be cautious when using outdoor heat generating tools and equipment.

Town of Whitby: Whitby annunced that an open-air burn ban is currently in effect due to poor air quality. All burn permits are suspended until further notice. “Thank you for working with us to help keep our community safe.”

City of Oshawa: Oshawa Fire Services is enforcing a fire ban for burn permits due to the exceptionally dry weather, elevated temperatures and wildfires in parts of Ontario.

It said all open-air burning permits are suspended until further notice and are prohibited under City of Oshawa By-law #73-2012. The ban is effective immediately and no permits will be issued during this time. Those not complying with the ban may be subjected to fines.

Municipality of Clarington: It announced that effective immediately, Clarington Fire has implemented a burn ban for Clarington due to the current dry conditions and deteriorating air quality.

Township of Scugog: It said effective immediately, open-air burning is restricted to evening recreational fires, permits required. These fires can’t exceed 60cm in diameter and are only allowed between 4pm and 12am. All other burning is banned.

The Township of Uxbridge issued the ban on Tuesday, while the Township of Brock has had a total burn ban in effect since May 31. “Burning of any type in the Township of Brock is strictly prohibited.”
