Durham Police investigators executed a search warrant at a tow yard in Brampton and have seized 59 vehicles as part of this ongoing vehicle investigation.
On Friday, June 18, investigators from DRPS executed a search warrant at a tow yard. Members were on scene for several hours and seized approximately 59 vehicles valued at approximately $750,000. These vehicles had been unlawfully towed and stored at this location. Some of the vehicles were sold unlawfully. The vehicles have been returned to their respective owners. Investigators would like to thank the Insurance Bureau of Canada for their assistance in this matter, said a police statement.
Two suspects, face 13 charges each under the Consumer Protection Act. Two commercial businesses also face 13 charges each under the Consumer Protection Act.
Some of these charges include: Tow and Storage: Supplier Failed to Provide Consumer with Prescribed Information Before Obtaining Consumer’s Authorization to Proceed with Service; Supplier Failed to Obtain Consumer’s Authorization before Services Commenced; Supplier Failed to Provide Consumer with a Copy of Authorization; Supplier Demanded/Received Payment before Delivering Invoice to Consumer with Prescribed Information.
The investigation is ongoing.
The public is encouraged to be vigilant when using tow and storage services. The Consumer Protection Act contains guidelines that towing and storage providers must comply with when towing and storing your vehicle.
