Works at Howard Street GO train station site to start soon

Works on the preservation, structural rehabilitation, and demolition at the proposed GO train station site at 500 Howard Street in Oshawa, are scheduled to begin next month.

Metrolinx purchased the 500 Howard Street property in 2014 as part of the Bowmanville Expansion. It is being considered for a future GO Station as part of the Transit-Oriented Communities Program (TOC), said a city statement.

It said the property was evaluated by Metrolinx and has been identified as a provincial heritage property of significance, having satisfied criteria in both Ontario Regulation 9/06 and 10/06 under the Ontario Heritage Act.

The building structure consists of two adjoining parts (image above), Part 1 and Part 2. The plan for this project is to preserve and repair the Part 1 heritage component and demolish the Part 2 warehouse to make way for future work.

The statement said specialized crews will mobilize in June to begin the preservation and structural rehabilitation of the Part 1 heritage component. Following this, crews will continue with demolition activities of Part 2, while continuing additional preservation activities of other heritage elements throughout the structure.

The city statement said crews are to be on site from mid-June to Fall 2024, subject to adjustment, between 7 am and 4:30 pm between Monday and Friday, as per municipal by-laws.

It said the building structure consists of two adjoining parts:

    • Part 1: The building’s frontage on Front Street consists of a two-storey clay brick and wooden beam heritage structure.
    • Part 2: The industrial one- and two-storey brick and aluminum structure extends west into the property from the rear of Part 1.

Preservation activities for this contract include structural rehabilitation and mothballing of the heritage component in its entirety for Part 1. Additional preservation activities include the retention and protection of cultural heritage elements, conducted by preservation experts.

Demolition activities for this contract include the demolition of the Part 2 main warehouse building and generator room.

The city said there will be minor impact to pedestrians along adjacent sidewalks due to construction activities, however access to pathways and sidewalks will be maintained. There will be no anticipated traffic or transit impacts from the upcoming works.
