Ajax Mayor Shaun Collier re-elected chair of DRPS board

The Durham Regional Police Service Board has announced the re-election of Ajax Mayor Shaun Collier as chair for 2025 during its meeting on January 21. Dr. Garry Cubitt was also re-elected as vice-chair, with both continuing in roles they have held since 2023.

“It is an honour to serve as the chair of the board again in 2025,” said Collier. “We have made important progress over the last two years: strengthening our Command Team, implementing the DRPS Strategic Plan and the Community Safety and Policing Act, and ensuring the DRPS has sufficient resources to fulfill its mandate – to keep our community safe. Effective governance will continue to be key to building the community’s trust in the DRPS, and we look forward to working with Chief Moreira and all members of the service to deliver the best possible policing services to the citizens of our region. I am grateful to the board members for their continued confidence.”

Collier has lived in Ajax since 1969 and has been a member of council since 2003. In addition to serving as mayor of Ajax and chair of the Police Service Board, he is involved in various leadership roles, including:

  • Board of Directors of Elexicon Corporation
  • Ontario’s Big City Mayors (OBCM)
  • Advocate for innovation, technology, and relationship-building

Vice-Chair Dr. Garry Cubitt

Dr. Cubitt is the former Chief Administrative Officer for the Regional Municipality of Durham. He has extensive experience in municipal governance and has served on several boards, including:

  • Board of Governors for Trent University
  • Past chair of Durham College of Applied Arts and Technology Board
  • Board of Governors for Ontario Tech University
  • Multiple municipal boards and committees
  • OMERS Sponsors Corporation (appointed in 2022) as a representative of the Ontario Association of Police Services Boards

New Member

John Fahey

Additionally, the Durham Regional Police Service Board has announced the appointment of John Fahey to the board by the provincial government for a two-year term.

Fahey expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating “It is an honour to represent the community as a member of the Police Service Board. Policing is a vital and honourable public service, and I am eager to engage in the Board’s deliberations and decision-making to support the safety of Durham Region.”

The Durham Regional Police Service Board oversees the Durham Regional Police Service, setting policies and objectives to ensure effective law enforcement. Its responsibilities include:

  • Establishing policing objectives in consultation with the chief of police
  • Setting policies for policing and police administration
  • Hiring and monitoring the chief of police

The board consists of seven members, with three appointed by the Province of Ontario and four selected by Durham Regional Council.
