Durham drivers are seen to be improving as far as driving impaired is concerned, according to statistics released by the Durham Regional Police Service.
In the four weeks so far of the Festive RIDE 2022 campaign, 57 impaired drivers have been charged, while the same during the end of week four stood at 59 last year.
However, of note this week was several arrested parties provided breath samples in excess of 200 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood, more than 2.5 times the legal limit – with one driver providing samples nearly five times the legal limit, said a police statement.
DRPS completed its fourth week of the 2022 Festive RIDE program, stopping more than 1,550 vehicles and charging 14 drivers with impaired driving offences.
Durham Regional officers conducted checks in Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa, Whitby, Port Perry, Scugog, Clarington and Bowmanville with the following totals (the numbers in brackets reflect 2021 fourth week totals for comparison):
1550 (1240) Vehicles stopped by RIDE.
77 (36) People given Roadside Breath Tests
8 (3) People received “3 Day Suspensions” for registering a “WARN”
2 (4) Novice Driver received a 3, 7 or 30 Licence Suspension
14 (12) People were charged with Impaired Driving Offences
1 (3) Other Criminal Code Charges
113 (56) Charged with various Highway Traffic Act offences
0 (0) Drug Offences
This week saw DRPS officers working alongside partners with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). The team was also joined by volunteers from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) of Durham Region.

Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, anyone charged with a criminal impaired driving offence will have their driver’s licence suspended for ninety days and their vehicle impounded automatically for seven days.
