No automatic vote recount needed for ward: Oshawa

The City of Oshawa yesterday stated that no automatic vote recount is required for the office of Ward 1 city councillor.

There were three candidates for the Ward 1 seat including Theresa Anne Corless, Ahmad Rashed Formuly and Rosemary McConkey.

Councillor McConkey

McConkey was declared elected.

The city cited the Municipal Election Recount Policy, adopted by Council on October 17, 2017, which indicates that an automatic recount shall be conducted where the vote differential between the last available candidate(s) elected and the first candidate(s) not elected is equal to or less than one quarter of one percent (0.25%) of the total number of votes cast for the office, rounded up to the closest whole number.

In the instance of the office of Ward 1 city councillor, there were 2,402 votes cast. For an automatic recount to occur, the required differential would be six (6) votes or less between the elected candidate and the first candidate not elected. The vote difference in this instance is eight (8) votes, which is above the threshold for an automatic recount, said the city statement.

As a result, there will be no automatic recount for the City of Oshawa’s Ward 1 City Councillor seat, as the differential does not reach the required threshold, it added.

As per the City of Oshawa Clerk, the city’s new council composition is as follows:

  • Mayor: Dan Carter;
  • Ward 1 Regional and City Councillor: John Neal;
  • Ward 1 City Councillor: Rosemary McConkey;
  • Ward 2 Regional and City Councillor: Tito-Dante Marimpietri;
  • Ward 2 City Councillor: Jim Lee;
  • Ward 3 Regional and City Councillor: Bob Chapman;
  • Ward 3 City Councillor: Bradley Marks;
  • Ward 4 Regional and City Councillor: Rick Kerr;
  • Ward 4 City Councillor: Derek Giberson;
  • Ward 5 Regional and City Councillor: Brian Nicholson; and,
  • Ward 5 City Councillor: John Gray.
