Durham Regional Police are appealing for witnesses after hate-motivated graffiti was discovered on a private property in Oshawa.
Investigators believe the incident was targeted and are asking anyone with information or surveillance footage from the area to come forward.
On Sunday, June 15, around 2:50 pm, officers from East Division responded to a mischief call near Adelaide Avenue East and Townline Road North. According to police, the victim’s property was defaced with hateful and derogatory slurs by unknown suspect(s).
“We are deeply concerned and disheartened by this act of hate and property damage directed toward the 2SLGBTQI+ community and all those impacted by this senseless act,” police said in a statement. “Everyone deserves to feel safe and accepted for who they are.”
An investigation is ongoing, and police say they are committed to holding those responsible accountable.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Constable Cronin of the East Division Criminal Investigations Branch at 1-888-579-1520.
Hate crime across southern Durham municipalities has been rising in recent times, but is mostly related to antisemitism and Islamophobia.
