Solemn service bids farewell to 153-year old Clarington church

A solemn service yesterday marked the formal farewell to one of the oldest churches in Durham – the 153-year old Maple Grove United Church in Clarington.

A packed sanctuary with spill-over worshippers accommodated in the wing, brought forward some nostalgic memories.

“I was baptised here,” said one of the worshippers, who had come to bid goodbye to her childhood go-to place.

The service was led by Guest Minister Rev. David O. Jones with the church pastor, Rev. Carol Gillard. The choir was directed by Tracey Marek.

Rev. Jones traced the history of the area to when Bowmanville was still known as Darlington.

Maple Grove United Church formally records its history from Sunday, December 29, 1872, when worship was held at 11 am, 3 pm and 5:30 pm. In September 2022, the church had celebrated 150 years.

One last service will be held next Sunday June 29, following which the building will be prepared for handover.

The church property has been sold and is likely to remain a place of worship.
