Whitby Highway 401 crash officers decline SIU interview

Ontario’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU), which is holding an inquiry into the Highway 401 crash in April that killed four people, said two officers involved have not been interviewed or provided their notes.

“Two subject officials were designated. At this time, neither has submitted to an interview or provided their duty notes, as is their legal right,” said an SIU update on the crash released yesterday.

A cargo van was pursued by police from Bowmanville in Clarington, and the van driver got onto Highway 401 the wrong way in Oshawa. A multi-vegicle colllision in Whitby caused the death of an infant and its two grandparents in a Nissan Sentra, and the cargo van driver. Post-mortems for the four deceased individuals took place on May 1.

Two individuals suffered serious injuries and were transported to hospital: The 27-year-old female from the Nissan Sentra was released from hospital, while the 38-year-old occupant of the cargo van remains in hospital, SIU said.

SIU has so far designated 19 witness officials. “Interviews are ongoing.” It said so far, 36 civilian witnesses have been identified and interviewed.

“At this time, the SIU is in possession of more than 100 videos, obtained from: in-car camera footage, drone footage, body worn camera footage, Ministry of Transportation footage and civilian recordings,” said the update.

SIU has seven investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist, who continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the multi-vehicle collision that occurred  in Whitby on April 29.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.
