Woman out with child stabbed in neck from behind

Durham Police investigators are searching for a male suspect after he approached a female victim and stabbed her in the neck Tuesday afternoon, in Whitby.

On May 9 at about 2:20 pm, members of Central West Division were called to the area of Closson Drive and Des Newman Boulevard, Whitby for an armed person.

The victim was walking in the area with their child, when the suspect approached them from behind and used an unknown object to pierce the victim’s neck, said a police statement.

The suspect fled the area on foot, travelling southbound on Des Newman Boulevard. Investigators are working to determine what occurred and are appealing to the public for assistance.

The victim attended a local area hospital where she received treatment and was released. There were no injuries to the child, police said.

The suspect is described as: male, South Asian, approximately 20 years of age, medium build, 5 feet 9 inches in height, short black hair.

An image of the suspect is attached and can be viewed at www.drps.ca under Newsroom. On May 12, police asked the suspect’s image to be removed.

Police are encouraging anyone with information or video footage, including dashcam and home surveillance, to come forward.
