Do some drivers deliberately ignore community safety zones?

On the first day of the publicized ‘In the Zone’ traffic safety blitz, Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) still came across several Durham drivers who ignored community safety zones.

“First driver pulled over for disobey stop sign (fail to stop) – right in front of an elementary school,” said a police tweet.

“Please obey all stop signs. Let’s all do our part to make sure the roadways are safe for kids to cross as they make their to way to class,” it added.

However, their plea seemed to fall on some deaf ears.

“Didn’t take long to charge the first speeder in this community safety zone,” said another tweet.

The motorist was doing 68kmh in a 50kmh zone, right in front of an elementary school during the busiest time, that is, drop off.

“Please slow down! Let’s keep the kids safe as they make their way back-to-school,” the police emphasized.

Unfortunately, this too went unheeded as officers had to pull over a driver for going 22kmh over the speed limit in a community safety zone in the Town of Whitby.

The driver advised our officer that they weren’t paying attention to their speed. Please be alert and aware while driving, said the police.

Unfortunately, that too didn’t last long. A vehicle was just pulled over for speeding – 61kmh in a 40kmh community safety zone.

The driver also failed to surrender a drivers licence, police said.

DRPS said in another incident in Whitby, a driver was pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt which is a $240 fine. Seatbelts save lives.

Monitoring traffic in Uxbridge

North Division too reported numerous In the Zone tickets – speeding, removing the back plate and installing a trailer hitch, insecure load, seatbelts and G1 driver unaccompanied – the accompanying driver sleeping in the back seat, etc.

The day ended with a road closure in Oshawa on Harmony and Bloor due to an accident investigation as well as off ramp from 401 west bound at Harmony. Please avoid the area, said the police.
