The Regional Municipality of Durham has issued mandatory water restrictions for residents and businesses in the community of Bowmanville, located within the Municipality of Clarington.
Effective immediately and until further notice, all non-essential indoor and outdoor water use must be discontinued. The restrictions are being implemented to ensure sufficient water supply for critical needs, including fire protection, while the region addresses a maintenance issue at the local water treatment plant, said a statement.
According to the region, one of the plant’s three filters is currently undergoing maintenance. While water quality remains unaffected—thanks to the continued operation of the remaining filters—the overall treatment capacity has been temporarily reduced. As a result, restrictions are necessary to help maintain safe water levels during this period.
Examples of non-essential water use include:
- Washing cars
- Cleaning driveways or decks
- Watering lawns
Once restrictions are lifted, residents must resume lawn watering in accordance with the region’s mandatory odd-even day lawn watering schedule, in effect annually from May to September, as outlined in the regional Water Supply By-law #89-2003.
