Dad, three-year-old survive hit-and-run only to be struck down

A 40-year-old father and his three-year-old daughter have died after being struck by a vehicle in Pickering, according to Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS).

On Tuesday, January 21, at about 7:50 pm, officers from West Division responded to a fail-to-remain collision at the intersection of Brock Road and Taunton Road.

Police say a 39-year-old woman from Pickering was driving a Nissan southbound through the intersection on a green light when a northbound Honda, driven by a 40-year-old man from Pickering, turned left to go westbound on Taunton Road and collided with the Nissan.

The Honda continued westbound on Taunton Road for about 350 metres, left the roadway, struck a guardrail, and came to a stop in a ditch.

The driver exited the vehicle and removed his three-year-old daughter before attempting to cross Taunton Road while carrying her. As they crossed, they were struck by a westbound BMW driven by a 52-year-old man from Ajax, police said.

Emergency responders transported the father to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. His three-year-old daughter was taken to a Toronto hospital, where she was treated but later pronounced dead.

The Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene, and the roadway was closed for several hours while evidence was collected. Police say the investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call DC Latour of the Collision Investigation Unit at 905-579-1520 (toll-free 1-888-579-1520) ext. 5226.
